As a “full-timer,” I am on the road 100% of the time. I am also a vandweller so most of my nights are spent in the back of my van. But, occasionally, I treat myself to a night in a motel or hotel. These are usually nights for personal hygiene, a reliable internet connection, just a more comfortable bed, or I’m just flat out tired of the vanlife for a night.

When was the last time you received a “hard key” for your room at a motel or hotel? This place brings charm and comfort back. Forget the big brand, corporate giant hotel/motels. THIS is the place to be.

Rarely does a stay in a motel meet the “odd & unusual” description that is the accepted subject matter of these blog posts. But, there’s always an exception and this is one. The Evergreen Motel & RV Park was chosen because you can stay in an actual caboose! But upon visiting, I learned it was much more to this visit than I had planned for. I highly recommend this “old-school,” privately owned, non corporate location for clean, comfortable, FRIENDLY lodging.

I was traveling through Pratt, KS to see another “odd & unusual” site, the Hot & Cold Water Towers (there is a separate post for them, just click on the name). I pulled into Evergreen, not knowing if I wanted a room or an RV parking space. I opted for the room, #22 as stamped into the hard key and the door pictured here.

Quite frankly the room was nothing but clean and comfortable, VERY clean and VERY comfortable. What made this place stand out was the people. it was great here.

The grounds here were well kept and very scenic. I didn’t really venture into the RV Park at the rear of the property, so no real report there. If it is as I imagine, like the rest of the property, it’s great.

Just a good, old fashioned motel along the side of what was once a main through way, I’m sure. These types of places are fast disappearing from the landscape, replaced by big brand name corporate, impersonal locations. Unfortunately, “mom & pop” motels are going the way of most “mom & pop” businesses… being replaced by big corporate enterprises. It’s a shame, to be sure.

I didn’t get to stay in the caboose, unfortunately. It was already occupied and I didn’t even get to tour the inside.

The caboose has been repainted but maintains the Burlington Northern branding.

As always, THANK YOU for the visit. I welcome and appreciate comments (at the bottom of every page/post) and/or EMAILS. Please feel free to SUBSCRIBE (free or voluntary donation) to this site. 1. This is so cool! I went to read this one from your Hot & Cold running water blog to see the Caboose room. This is now on my bucket list: Caboose, nostalgic hard key, clean & good people. Yes, please.
