I had driven by this place about 6 months before this visit and had to come back and out what it was all about!!! Just looked like an old, vintage motel with LOTS of character. I mean who puts a flying saucer on their roof?

And yet, there it is!

The exterior of the motel carries on the space age theme throughout. I did not spend a night, but assume the same of the room interiors.

The rooms maintain the Space Age Lodge theme
Decorative space themed exteriors
Support poles have planets, stars, drilled out
Of course, the room numbers are UFOs
Even the Pool House is a Space Age Geodesic Dome!

According to information provided by front desk personnel (yes, I always ask permission before I start taking photos, etc.), the motel was built in 1964/1965 (I figured older) and originally had a three 10 foot diameter satellite replicas on the roof. These were replaced with the flying saucer in a 1969 renovation. What a shame!

The lobby and interior has several images on the ceiling and around the area depicting space scenes. According to the reports I was given, the area surrounding Gila Bend, was instrumental in providing raw materials for rockets, etc. in the early days of space exploration. The owners of the Space Age Lodge commemorated these contributions in the architecture and design of the property.

There is also a restaurant on site, which was destroyed by fire in 1998 but was rebuilt. I had dinner there. Good food, great ambiance, what with all the space stuff.
